Sampling Flashcards
What is systematic random sampling?
- we select the nth case from any sample
- every case must have an equal chance of being in the sample
- arbitrary starting point is selected at random
- every individual has an equal chance of being sampled, but every combination does not
What is equal probability sampling method?
a procedure for producing a sample in which every case in the target population has an equal probability of being selected.
What is simple random sampling?
every case in the target population has an equal chance of selection and so does every possible combination of cases.
What is stratified random sampling?
researchers divide a population into homogeneous subpopulations called strata (the plural of stratum) based on specific characteristics (e.g., race, gender identity, location, etc.). Every member of the population studied should be in exactly one stratum. Each stratum is then sampled using another probability sampling method.
What is a cluster random sample?
researchers divide a population into
smaller groups known as clusters. They then randomly select among these clusters to form a sample (single-stage), or randomly select individual units from within the cluster to use as your sample (double-stage).
What are the types of probability sampling?
- Stratified sampling
- Cluster sampling
- Systematic sampling
- Simple random sampling
What are the types of non-probability sampling?
- Quota sampling
- Self selected sampling
- Convenience sampling
- Purposive sampling
- Snowball sampling
What is non probability sampling?
sampling techniques where the likelihood of any particular member of the population being selected into the sample is unknown or cannot be determined.
What is quota sampling?
- researchers aim to ensure that the sample includes specific proportions of individuals with certain characteristics, traits, or demographics
- researchers intentionally select participants to match predefined quotas based on key variables
What is self selected sampling?
individuals voluntarily choose to participate in the study, often in response to recruitment efforts such as advertisements, invitations, or calls for participation
What is convenience sampling?
participants are selected based on their easy accessibility or convenience to the researcher. especially in situations where it is challenging or impractical to obtain a random or representative sample from the population of interest.
What is purposive sampling?
researchers deliberately select participants based on specific criteria or characteristics relevant to the research question or objectives.
What is snowball sampling?
new units are recruited by other
units to form part of the sample.
