Repeated measures ANOVA Flashcards
If sphericity is not satisfied
Results from RM ANOVA are not robust.
* Increases chances of TYPE II error.
Mauchly’s test estimates
the degree of sphericity
Sphericity implies
that all pairwise interaction will be equally large
What is sphericity
It is the condition of equal variances among the differences between all possible pairs of
within-subject conditions (i.e., levels of the independent variable). Sphericity refers
to the condition where the variances of the differences between all combinations
of related groups are equal.
Assumptions of RM ANOVA
- Independent random sampling
- Normal distributions
- Homogeneity of variances
- Homogeneity of co-variance
Compound symmetry
- Homogeneity of variances
- Homogeneity of co-variance
Homogeneity of covariance exists only when
all pairs of treatment levels have the same amount of covariance
Epsilon
estimate of the degree of sphericity in the experimental data.
ε can be multiplied by the df of RM ANOVA to calculate adjusted degree of freedom to get adjusted critical F ratio.
How is epsilon valuated
via various pairwise interactions in the experimental data.
How is epsilon evaluated
- Greenhouse and Geisser method.
*
Huynh and Feldt method
Value ranges of epsilon
Its value ranges from 1 to 1/(c-1).
1 is maximum value and represents presence of sphericity.
1/(c-1) total lack of sphericity.
Repeated measures design
research design that involves multiple measures
of the same variable taken on the same or matched subjects either under
different conditions or more than two time periods.
An ANOVA with repeated measures is
used to compare three or more group
means where the participants are the same in each group.
The matched pairs (or repeated measures) ANOVA compares means across
three or more levels of the treatment (or conditions) that are based on repeated
observations.
Applicable in data-sets where
at least 1 dependent variable that has more than
one observation, and when at least one of the factors is related (i.e., matched
pairs IV has been used).
