sampling Flashcards
1
Q
volunteer sampling strength
A
- quick, convenient, economical way of sampling
- useful when the target population is hard to detect
2
Q
volunteer sampling weakness
A
- often unrepresentative as it look at if subjects are free and not entire population and what is needed
- researchers often have to wait long time for participants to volunteer
3
Q
opportunity sample strength
A
- quick, convenient, economical way and family, friends can be chosen.
- useful when investigating processes that are thought to work in similar ways with others
4
Q
opportunity sample weakness
A
- unrepresentative sample as researcher chose participant on whether they are helpful
- within the opportunity sample participants want to decline to take part so it becomes a self-selected sample
5
Q
stratified strength
A
- deliberate effort made to identify characteristics representative of the target population.
- representative sample as everyone in the population has an equal chance of being in the sample.
6
Q
stratified weakness
A
- time consuming to identify subcategories and calculating their proportion to the target population
- relies on the researcher knowing all the required groups and forces choices of the individuals which can bias by leaving some out
7
Q
random strength
A
- from the beginning it is clear who the sample is and how it was selected, so any bias can be mathematically taken into account
- representative unbiased sample as the entire target population has an equal and fair chance of being part of the sample.
8
Q
random weakness
A
- larger the population harder it becomes to compile an original selection list of everyone becomes impractical.
- lots of time taken to gather the target population to sample from.
