designs Flashcards
1
Q
strength of independent
A
- no demand characteristics as conditions can’t be compared as participants take part in only 1 condition and less likely to guess aim of study
- order effects like boredom, practice avoided as participants take part in only 1 condition
2
Q
weakness of independent
A
- ppt variables can become confounding variables as different people used in every condition and can reduce reliability.
- you need to gather twice as many people, making the process time consuming and uneconomical
3
Q
matched pairs
A
matching every subject in one to a similar person in another group
4
Q
strengths of matched
A
- ppt variables controlled as they are paired on similar traits
- no demand characteristics as ppt take part in only 1 condition so aim not likely to be guessed
5
Q
weakness of matched
A
- if 1 person drops out their pair needs to do too and can be expensive if they need to b replaced so less economical
- matching subjects are time consuming as close matches hard to find so less effective
6
Q
strengths of counterbalancing
A
- reduced participant variables and becomes a control as same participants used in both conditions
- fewer participants make it economical as ppt in both conditions
7
Q
weakness of counterbalancing
A
- order effects present as ppt do both conditions
- demand characteristics happen as the person can guess the aim of the study and there can be social desirability
