sampling Flashcards
random sampling
everyone has equal chance being selected, eg picking name out of hat
s&l
s - unbiased - everyone has equal chance
L- need to contact all those selected which can take time
or not everyone can do experiment
if picked old person, and experiment is lifting weight
opportunity sample
select who are easily available/convenient at time of study , eg people walking by you in street
s and l
s - easiest method as you find first suitable participant doesn’t take time
l - bias as sample drawn from small part of population, won’t represent everyone
volunteer sample
where participant optionally choose to take part in experiment eg saw in newspaper or internet.
l&s
s- quick and easy, gives access to variety of population, less bias and more representative
systematic
chosen from list of target population (list of poeple) and EVERY Nth PERSON eg every 5th person picked.
l&s
s - unbias as participants selected using objective system. canf choose participant
l- VERY TIME CONSUMING finding full list of people
stratified
produced by identifying subgroups according to frequency in population.
then selected randomly from subgroup
eg, STRATA within population identified eg boys and girls or age groups 10-12
then after target population found, will do random sampling
l&s
s - more representative then other methods as it’s proportional/randomly selected representation of subgroup
l- time consuming to identify subgroup then randomly select and contact them
