observational technique Flashcards
naturalistic observation
carried out in everyday setting, investigator doesn’t interfere
controlled observation
behaviour observed but under conditions where certain variables have been organised by researcher
s&l naturalistic
s - high in ecological validity- realistic picture of behaviour
l- no control so something unknown to observer may account to behaviour observed
controlled s&l
s - observer can focus on particular aspects of behaviour
l - environment being unnatural and participants behaviour also bring less natural
overt observation
partipants aware behaviour being studied
lim
affect naturalness of their behaviour affecting validity
covert
observing without knowledge
s&l
s- unaware so more natural behaviour
l- ethical issues, eg acceptable to observe if not private
non participant observation
observer separate from the people being observed
s&l
s- more likely to be objective as they aren’t part of group being observed
l- more likely to be covert so ethical issues such as can’t include pribate info
observational s &l
s- high validity : record what they do then what they say
l- observer bias
participant
observer participates in the activity being observed
l&s
s- may provide special insights into behaviour from sonde that may not otherwise be gained
l- more likely to be overt, issues of participant awareness
