natural and quasi experiments Flashcards
natural experiments
experimenter hasn’t manipulated IV. “true experiments”.
natural experiment is a experiment with naturally occurring independent variable which is not manipulated by experimenter
however sometimes they can’t manipulate the IV as it’s impossible to manipulate the IV eg make people left handed if right handed.
UNETHICAL to manipulate IV
difference between field and natural
“natural” experiment refers to independent variable and not setting
naturalistic setting of environment is FIELD EXPERIMENT
quasi experiments
type of natural experiment, contain naturally occurring IV , however in quasi the natural occurring IV is a DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PEOPLE THAT ALREADY EXIST (eg age gender) you’re born with, no one can manipulate.
researcher records effect of “quasi-IV” on a DV
strengths
high ecological validity- variables naturally occurring so fines can easily generalised to real life settings.
high external validity
strength
high ethical approval - you get to do it in the first place, way of studying effects without being impossible to replicate
lim
no casual relationship- no cause and effect as no IV has been manipulated
lim
low internal validity - as ur not manipulating IV just study conditions of IV as you find them.
lim
not replicable - due to lack of control not manipulating IV, not control certain things etc.
