samplers Flashcards
what is a sampler?
when you take part of a song or a single note/sound and use it in another context
what year was the tape recorder made/used?
1960
What did the tape recorder do/ used for?
it would capture sounds then the ends would be spliced to make a loop so that the playback direction/speed could be reversed
what was a limitations of the tape recorder?
impossible to change the speed of playback without changing pitch
what was the mellotron?
It was an early sampler created in 1962 that used different banks of pre-recorded tapes giving several choices of sound. It was expensive and fragile.
what is keyboard tracking?
spreading a single sample out across a keyboard where sample is pitch shifted in response to key
what is multisampling?
taking a sample every few notes and mapping across keyboard, sample is pitch shifted across smaller rang of notes
what is velocity layering?
switching between a number of different samples depending on MIDI velocity
what is the difference between a sampler and a synthesiser?
a sampler uses an audio source as a starting point instead of tone produced on an oscillator
what is meant by the term normalise?
an effect that increases volume to the maximum without distortions
what does stuttering do?
repeats small parts of the sample to create a ‘stutter’
what is gapping?
adding spaces between small parts of the sample
what is time stretch?
slowing down or speeding up the sample which also alters the pitch dependant on direction
what is pitch shift?
moving the entire sample up or down in pitch, the higher the pitch the faster the playback
what is destructive editing?
changing audio files with the sample usually not reversible
what is non-destructive editing?
doesn’t change audio file and effects/processing is easily removed
