distortion Flashcards
what is clipping?
occurs when a signal exceeds max level system can handle leading to waveform
what is the difference between hard and soft clipping?
hard clipping is digital and soft clipping is analogue
what is the difference between linear and non-linear distortion?
linear distortion alters amplitude proportionally whereas non - linear distortion introduces new frequencies and harmonics
what does harmonic distortion do?
adds over tones to the signal to enhance warmth
what is saturation?
subtle distortion from overdriving analogue equipment (tapes)
what is overdrive?
soft clipping for a thicker sound, often used in guitar amps
what is fuzz?
extreme distortion mimicking broken amplifiers
what is bit chrushing?
‘crushes’ bit depth for a lo-fi effect
