reverb Flashcards
1
Q
What is reverb?
A
the ambience found in a space, captured naturally or created artificially
2
Q
what is HF damping?
A
when it increases warmth in a track as high frequencies are absorbed
3
Q
what are 3 features involved with creating reverb in a live room?
A
- it is a well acoustic room
- creates natural reverb but the reverb then can’t be removed after sound is captured
- live rooms are expensive and when performing live these sounds can be reproduced
4
Q
what is plate reverb?
A
feeding audio signals through a thin metal plate suspended in a frame
5
Q
give 2 features of plate reverb…
A
- reverb time can be adjusted by damping vibrations using felt pads
- used mainly in 60s-70s on vocals and drum machines
6
Q
what is spring reverb?
A
similar to plate reverb but uses a spring not a metal plate
7
Q
give 2 features of spring reverb…
A
- cheaper and more practical
- used in guitar amps and makes more metallic sounds than plate reverb
8
Q
what are 3 features of digital reverb?
A
- first used in 1980s
- uses lots of delays and filtering to simulate natural reflections
- enables lots of pre-sets to be stored
9
Q
what is involved in convolution reverb?
A
- produces real reverb from a real space
- late 1990s
- impulse reflex is generated in a space and response is recorded
10
Q
give 3 factors of gated reverb
A
- rock 1980s
- reverb on percussion sounds are cut off to reduce chance of a muddy mix
- fed through a noise gate
11
Q
what is reverse reverb?
A
- reverb played backward
- used in 1960s
- recorded to tape then played backwards
