delay Flashcards
what is delay?
a repeated signal that creates an echo
what is the difference between analogue and digital delay?
analogue delay captures sound as continuous waveforms of acoustics whereas digital delay converts sound into binary to create a delay
what is delay time?
the amount of time between an original signal and a delayed signal (gap between each repeat)
what is feedback?
when delayed signal is fed back into the input of delay - the more feedback there is, the more number of repeats
3 features of tape delay…
- analogue
- recorded sound onto magnetic tape then played it back
- tape would eventually degrade and need replacing as high frequencies were lost giving it a ‘warm feel’
3 features of bucket brigade delay…
- these chips were used to store original sound
- signal is held in each capacitor then moved onto the next holding place to create a delayed signal
- chips were more reliable but noisy - longer delays = more noise
3 features of slap-back delay…
-originally analogue with a repeat after 80-200ms
- almost percussive effect, repeat is high level enough to be noticeable
- heard in Rock N Roll 1950s, used to thicken vocals and electrical guitar
what does multi-tap delay do?
- allows several delay times in one effect
what does ping-pong/stereo delay do?
- gives the option to pan delayed sound
- sometimes multi-tap delay will pan each ‘tap’ in a different direction and allow other features such as volume and filtering
what is a doubling effect?
- it thickens the signal to sound like 2 simultaneous versions of the original
