Soil vs. dirt
Soil can sustain life, dirt had no nutrients
Soil composition
Subject to change (aprox.)- 25% water, 25% air
Always the same- 45% minerals (rock particles), 5% organic matter (adds nutrients to soil)
Look at chart
What component of soil allows for air space
Perlite
What component of soil allows for water space
Vermiculite
Why do we use soil
Supports the plant
Provides water and air space
Holds nutrients
What is the process called that a plant goes through to release extra water and gases
Transpiration
What is the part of the seed that protects it from weather and other environmental conditions?
Seed coat
What part of the seed becomes the stem of a germinating seed?
Hypocotyl
What part of the seed becomes the root of the germinating seed?
Radicle
Define seed germination
The sprouting and growing of a seed affected by
Sunlight/darkness
Temp
Water level
What is the difference between a native plant and an invasive plant
A native plant has always grown in the area
An invasive plant is brought in from another area and takes over quickly, typically killing out a native plant in the process
What does it mean if a fertilizer is 20-10-3? What is wrong with my plant if I am using that fertilizer?
20% nitrogen 10% phosphorus 3% potassium
Plant need more growth and green foliage.
If soil in a cornfield is at a ph level of 4, what does that mean and how can a farmer fix that level?
Soil is acidic, should add limestone to raise ph because with an incorrect ph level, nutrients will not be available for the plants use.
What are the differences between a corsage and a boutonnière
Corsage is for a female and is an arrangement of 2 or 5 flowers worn on the left shoulder or wrist
Boutonnière is a single flower or collection of flowers worn by males left laple near the button hole
If, when the pot is removed from a plant, the soil crumbles apart and there are a lack of roots, what macronutrient does the plant need
Phosphorus

What can you add to soil to lower ph
Sulfur
On a seed, what is the testa
Seed coat which protects the seed from weather and environmental conditions
On a seed, what is the hilium
Scar on the seed, marking the point of attachment to its parent plant.
What is the epicotyl on a seed
Will become the shoot of the plant
What is the cotyledon of a plant
An embryonic leaf in seed-bearing plants, become the first leaves to appear from a germinating seed

What is the difference between a fishery and aquaculture?
Fisherys are mostly in the ocean and deal with managing/manipulating wild fish, so that we can catch them from their native environment… Use fishing techniques
Aquaculture is the branch of science involved in breeding, rearing and harvesting domestic fish. Control whole life cycle and environment… Our lab is aquaculture… Use production systems
Need to know-aquaculture (trends in seafood consumption)
People in us are eating more fish every year. Most of our seafood comes from Asia ex. Catfish
What type of system is our lab? What kind of fish do we have?
Closed system- in tank, in filter, back in tank
Tilapia and koi
What are the five main types of aquaculture methods?
Shellfish raft, CLOSED SYSTEM, flow through system, ponds, net pens/floating cages
What happens as energy moves through the food web
90% of energy is list in body functions
What do the arrows represent in a food web?
Transfer of energy

Remember Fish game, tragedy of commons, what did we have to do to make fish population sustainable
Tragedy if commons- when a shared item is abused so that it is no longer useful
Exhaustible/in-exhaust able
Bunch
Renewable/non-renewable
Ncchc
Natural resources
Something from the earth that are put to use by humans
*What piece of legislation began the idea of the National FFA?
Vocational Education Act
*Who is Henry C. Groseclose, and why is he important to the National FFA Organization?
Professor of Agricultural Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg VA. He helped start the Future Farmers of Virginia.
What was the NFA? When did it begin? When did it merge with the FFA? What was happening in the United states at the time that allowed the merge to occur?
*New Farmers of America. Began 1935-1965 when it merged with FFA. The civil rights act, desegregation of schools, and they were similar were reasons the merge occurred.
Who was the first female to hold a national office, what year and what office?

1974
First African American in office.
