Salts and Neutralisation reactions Flashcards
Acids that make salts:
- HCl (Sodium chloride)
- HNO3 (Sodium nitrate)
- H2SO4 (Sodium sulphate)
Products of: Acid + Metal –>
–> Metal salt + Hydrogen
Products of: Acid + Metal Oxide –>
–> Metal salt + Water
Products of: Acid + Metal Hydroxide –>
–> Metal salt + Water
Products of: Acid + Metal Carbonate –>
–> Metal salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide
What is a base?
Any substanhce which could reacts with an acid to form a salt and water
Calcium nitrate contains ions Ca 2+ and NO3 -, give the formula for calcium nitrate
Ca(NO3)2
Method to make pure, dry crystals of magnesium sulfate from a metal oxide and a dilute acid
- Heat sulfuric acid over bunsen burner until it bubbles
- Add in magnesium oxide until its in excess
- When mixture cools, pour into a beaker, filtering out the excess magneisum oxide out with filter paper
- Pour mixture into evaporating dish and heat over a bunsen burner
- Turn off heat and let mixture cool and crystals form
- Pat crystals dry with towel
-Collect crystals
What are acids?
Acids are substances that release H+ ions when they dissolve in water
HCl –> H+ + Cl-
What are bases?
Bases are substances that react with acids. Some bases are soluable - these are called alkalis. Alkalis release hydroxide ions (OH-) in solutions.
