Ions And Ionic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is an ion?
A
An ion is an atom, or group of atoms with a positive or negative charge
2
Q
Which elements does ionic binding occur in?
A
Metals and non-metals
3
Q
What happens in ionic bonding?
A
Atoms either gain or lose electrons from one another, forming ions
4
Q
What is an ionic compound?
A
Compounds made up of ions
5
Q
Ionic compounds are arranged in..
A
- A regular 3D arrangement
- Giant lattice
- With strong electrostatic forces
- Positive and negative ions
6
Q
Properties of ionic compounds
A
- Solid at room temp (strong electrostatic forces, resulting in high melting points)
- Don’t conduct in solid state (ions can move around and carry a charge
- Conduct when liquid/molten (bonds break so ions are free to move and carry a charge)
- Brittle (extremely strong bonds - applying pressure to the rigid lattice structure causes them to move and break)
- Soluble (water breaks down the lattice)
