Metallic Bonds and Alloys Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the structure of a metal?
A
- Giant structures of atoms
- In regular patterns
- Form a lattice
- Exist as positive metal ions, surrounded by a sea of delocalised (free) electrons
- Individual metal ions are held together by strong electrostatic attraction
2
Q
Alloy
A
a metal created by 2 or more metals, to make it stronger
3
Q
How do metals conduct electricity
A
They contain delocalised electrons which are free to travel through the structure and carry a charge
4
Q
Are alloys harder than pure metals?
A
Yes. Differently sized atoms disrupt the regular lattice, making it harder for atoms to slide over the layers
