Covalent Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is covalent bonding?
A
Bonding between non-metal atoms, which combine together by sharing electrons
2
Q
Are covalent compounds usually simple or complex molecules?
A
Simple
3
Q
Properties of covalent compounds
A
- Low melting points (covalent bonds are strong however forces between molecules are weak and easy to overcome)
4
Q
Main giant covalent molecules
A
Diamond, graphite, silica, graphene
5
Q
Diamond info
A
- Made of carbon
- Has 4 covalent bonds
- High melting points
- Don’t conduct electricity (no delocalised electrons or ions free to move)
- Uses: cutting tools, jewelry
6
Q
Graphite info
A
- Made of carbon
- Has 3 covalent bonds
- High melting points
- Conducts electricity (has one delocalised electron)
- Uses: pencils (weak intermolecular bonds)
7
Q
Silica info
A
- Made of silicon and oxygen
- Has 2 covalent bonds
- High melting points
