Q

What are the features of the mucous part of the submandibular gland?

A

Acini are in forms of tubes not spheres
No intercalated or striated ducts in this area
Less in the way of ducts than parotid
- Presence of cap called serous deminlune that has serous secreting cells

Q

How is saliva hypotonic?

A

By removal of sodium, chloride and bicarbonate as it passes through striated ducts

12
Q

How can you differentiate serous cells from mucous cells?

A

Via the morphology of their secretory granules, serous cells have a characteristic dark granular appearance with routine haematoxylin and eosin staining. Mucous acini are paler since their mucin content does not readily take up routine stains.

16
Q

What are the main functions of saliva?

A
  • Lubrication and protection of the oral mucosa
  • Protects integrity of dental enamel via its content of minerals to aid mineralisation
  • Calcium and phosphate aid mineralisation whilst bicarbonate ions (buffering plaque acid)
  • Digestion of food - amylase
  • Mucosal immunity via immunoglobulins
  • Maintenance of oral homeostasis
17
Q

What controls the secretion of saliva by the glands?

A

Autonomic nervous system

18
Q

What glands do parasympathetic nerve impulses have complete control over?

A

Minor mucous secreting glands

19
Q

What is the chain of emptying ducts in the serous acinus?

A

Intercalated duct - striated duct - secretory duct (gets larger as you go on)

20
Q

Why is the striated duct called striated?

A

The basal ends of the cells in the duct wall are thrown into numerous folds
