Salivary Glands Flashcards
What are salivary glands?
are glands that open or secrete into the oral cavity
- most are small glands in the submucosa or mucosa of the oral epithelium
- other larger glands, which include the paired parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands
What and the location and what forms the parotid gland?
PG- entirely outside boundaries of the oral cavity in a shallow triangular shaped trench formed by;
1. posteriorly= SCM
2. anteriorly: rams of mandible
3/ superiorly: the base of the tench is formed by external acoustic meatus and posterior aspect of zygomatic arch
Where does the parotid duct pass ?
- ant across etc surface of master ms
- turns medially to penetrate buccinator ms
- opens adjacent to crown of 2nd upper molar
what does the parotid gland enclose?
- external carotid artery
- retromandibular vein
- facial nerve (VII)
What supplies the parotid gland?
- posterior auricular 2. superficial arteries ( branches of external carotid arty)
How is venous drainage of parotid gland achieved?
via retromandibular vein
Innervation of parotid gland
sensory: V3
autonomic: CNIX
Descirbe hook shaped submandibular glands:
lager arm of hook: is directed forward in horizontal plane below the mylohyoid muscle
smaller arm of hook ( deep par) of gland loops around posterior margin of mylohyoid muscle to enter and lie within the floor of the oral cavity opening on summit of a small sublingual pail beside base of frenulum of the tongue
blood supply of submandibular
sublingual and submittal arteries and veins
what loops under the submandibular duct?
lingual nerve
innervation of submandibular nerve
CNVII
Sublingual glands location
immediately lateral to submandibular duct and associated lingual nerve in floor of oral cavity
–.each lies directly against the medial surface of the mandible where it forms a shallow groove ( sublingual fossa) superior to anterior 1/3 of mylohyoid line.
- superior margin raises an elongate fold of mucosa ( sublingual fold) which extends from the poasterolateral aspect of the floor od the oral cavity to the sublingual papilla beside the base of the frenulum of tongue at midline anteriorly
blood supply of sublingual gland
submental arteries and veins
innervation of sublingual gland?
autonomic CNVII
