SAIDS Flashcards
Hydrocortisone
endogenous glucocorticoid
Equal anti-inflammatory and Na retaining potency
prednisolone
synthetic glucocorticoid
Stronger anti-inflammatory potency than Na retaining potency (than other exogenous steroids)
Fludrocortisone
synthetic glucocorticoid
Very high Na retaining potency
Used as an aldosterone replacement in Addisons Disease
Dexamethasone
synthetic glucocorticoid
No Na retaining potency, only anti-inflammatory potency
Long half life
Betamethasone
synthetic glucocorticoid
What are the SE of SAIDS
physical and mental dependence
metabolic effects
growth retardation in children (inhibit effects of IGF)
immunosuppression
osteoporosis (increase activity of osteoclasts)
repro effects
MR binding - causing CVS, eye, kidney effects
Cushings syndrome (ACTH independently caused)*
Conn’s syndrome
What are the normal effects of steroids
- Anti-inflammation
-induce annexin 1 that inhibits PLA2 (so good for treating asthma**)
-decrease transcription of COX2
- decrease immune cells and increase anti-inflam mediators IL10 - Metabolic
- carbs (anti-insulin, increase gluconeogenesis = hyperglycemia)
-protein (breakdown)
-lipids (deposit in face)
