Q

What are the SE of SAIDS

A

physical and mental dependence
metabolic effects
growth retardation in children (inhibit effects of IGF)
immunosuppression
osteoporosis (increase activity of osteoclasts)
repro effects
MR binding - causing CVS, eye, kidney effects
Cushings syndrome (ACTH independently caused)*
Conn’s syndrome

Q

What are the normal effects of steroids

A
  1. Anti-inflammation
-induce annexin 1 that inhibits PLA2 (so good for treating asthma**)
    -decrease transcription of COX2
    - decrease immune cells and increase anti-inflam mediators IL10
  2. Metabolic
    - carbs (anti-insulin, increase gluconeogenesis = hyperglycemia)
    -protein (breakdown)
    -lipids (deposit in face)
