Which parts of the car need to be checked regularly?
Lights, brakes, speedometer, horn, steering, exhaust, wipers, oil/water, battery level, and tires
What should you check your tires for?
- You should check the tread on your tyres when they are cold. They must be at least 1.6 mm deep across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire circumference.
- NEVER drive with tyres that have cuts or defects in the side site walls, as this is illegal.
- You should always remember to check your spare tyre too.
What should you do if there’s a warning light on the dashboard?
- don’t ignore it
- check the handbook for its meaning
What defects should you consult a garage for?
- the ABS light doesn’t go off when driving 5-10mph
- the steering vibrates
- the vehicle pulls to one side when breaking
When entering the car, you should :
- adjust the seat
- adjust the headrest
- wear suitable shoes
- adjust the mirrors
What are hazard lights for?
To warn others of a hazard ahead, such as if you are broken down, or there is queuing traffic on a motorway
When parking on a two way road at night, you should :
- park in the direction of traffic
- if the speed limit is over 30mph, switch on parking lights
How can you make your car secure?
- engage steering lock
- remove keys
- take valuables or leave them out of sight
- don’t leave registration paper in the car
- park in a well lit secure car park at night where possible
Where should you avoid parking?
- in front of an entrance
- at or near a bus stop
- at the top of a hill
- blocking lowered Kerb for access
- on a bend or opposite side of the road
- on/near a level crossing
To drive in a fuel efficient manner, you should :
- reduce your speed
- plan ahead
- change up gears as soon as possible
- have your vehicle serviced regularly
- switch off the engine when not in use
- walking / using transport for short journeys

Between the hours of 11.30pm to 7am unless it’s an emergency
