When you join a motorway from a slip road, you should :
- adjust your speed to match the traffic on the motorway
- give way to traffic already on the motorway
- keep in the left lane until you get used to the speed
How should you overtake on a motorway?
- overtake on the right
- only overtake on the left if traffic is in queues and the right hand is moving slower than the left
If traffic is joining from a slip lane, you should :
Move out of the left lane where possible
What is the National speed limit on a motorway?
70 mph (112 kmph)
What are the restrictions for trailers on motorways?
- restricted to 60mph
- cannot travel in the right lane of a three lane motorway, unless there are closures
When should you not use a lane on the motorway?
If a red X is above the lane
What do the colours of the reflective studs on motorways mean?
Red - between hard shoulder / carriageway
Amber - between carriageway / central reservation
White - between lanes
Green - between carriageway/ slip road
Fluorescent green / yellow - contra flow system or roadworks
When is it okay to stop on a motorway?
- if there are flashing red lights above every lane
- if told to do so by police
- in a traffic jam
- in an emergency / breakdown
When can you stop on hard shoulder?
ONLY when broken down, not to rest or make phone calls etc.
If you can’t get to the hard shoulder and your vehicle has broken down you should :
- switch on hazard lights
- only leave your vehicle if you can exit the motorway safely
What vehicles can’t be used on a motorway?
- bikes
- cycles under 50cc
- mobility scooters
- agricultural vehicles
- some slow moving vehicles
How should you use an emergency phone?
- emergency phones are usually at 1 mile intervals, and are connected directly to an emergency call centre
- whilst using, stand and face oncoming traffic so you can see hazards
- check your location on the nearest marker post and give this to the person on the call
