Safety Devices And Hazards Flashcards
Name 4 safety devices fitted to a diesel engine.
Low lube oil pressure
Low coolant pressure
High lube oil temperature
High coolant temperature
What are the point of safety devices?
To protect the engine by detecting faults within the system and tripping the engine if necessary.
How do safety devices work?
If the levels of temperature, pressure or speed within a system exceed a set level, the devices will cause an alarm will sound. If the levels continue to rise, the safety devices will cause the engine to trip.
Who is to be informed if an engine trips?
The MEOOW1
What happens when a fire is detected?
An alarm will alert the watchkeeper in the ships control centre or machinery control room. The firefighting system can then be operated either locally or remotely.
Name 4 diesel engine hazards.
Noise, high temperature, fire, moving machinery.
What precautions can be taken against fire hazards?
Wear correct PPE, stop all leaks and mop up spillages at once.
What precautions can be taken against mechanical machinery hazards?
Correct PPE, ensure protective guards are in place around high speed moving parts, be aware that machinery can be started and stopped from a remote location and the operature may not be aware if the machine is clear of personnel.
What is personal hygiene important and what does this include?
Not cleaning substances off yourself and not wearing the correct PPE can cause health and safety hazards. Ensure correct PPE is worn, make sure clothing is fastened and sleeves are rolled down. Ensure overalls are clean. Remove all watches and jewellery that could get cause im moving machinery. Wear the correct non slip footwear with toe protection and ensure laces are tied correctly. Use barrier cream to protect the skin from harmful products. Check any cuts and abraisons and shower immediately after working.
