Cooling System Flashcards
What is the purpose of the cooling system?
Closed loop system designed to cool the cylinder block and cylinder head.
What does the cooling system circulate?
Coolant consisting of 50% antifreeze and 50% fresh water.
What are the components of a cooling system?
Fresh water pump Engine block water passages/water jacket Thermostat Header tank Heat exchanger Vent cocks Salt water cooling circuit Sea cock and strainer Salt water circulating pump Bypass valves No return valves
What does the fresh water pump do?
Circulates water around the system under pressure.
What do engine block water passages do?
Allow water to circulate through the engine to remove heat.
What does the thermostat do?
Controls and maintains the engines running temperature. Allows for rapid heating up of the engine when started from cold.
What does the header tank do?
Acts as a reservoir to make up system losses and allow for expansion as water temperature rises. A non return valve allows a one way flow of water from the tank into the system.
What are vent cocks for?
Placed at high points in the circuit. Allow venting of air when filling the system and allow air into the system when draining the coolant for maintenence.
What is the salt water cooling circuit?
Direct flow system drawing water in from the sea, circulating it through the coolers and discharging it back into the ocean.
What purpose does the sea cock and strainer have?
The sea cock isolateds the suction side of the system from the sea and the strainer prevents large particles entering the system.
What does the discharge overboard valve do?
Isolates the discharge side of the system from the sea.
What 3 tests are carried out on a cooling system?
Salinity
Density
Acidity
