2
Q

What do compression rings do?

A

Provide a sliding seal between the piston and cylinder to prevent gases leaking into the sump.

Q

What do oil control rings do?

A

Prevent oil from the sump leaking into the combustion chamber. Assist with lubrication by scraping excess oil off the inside of the chamber.

Q

What does a piston do?

A

The piston moves up and down in a reciprocating motion within the cylinder. It enables compression of air in the cylinder and receives the pressure from combustion and transfers them to the crankshaft.

9
Q

What is a gudgeon pin?

A

Connects the piston to the connecting rod, transfering the load between the two.

Q

What is the purpose of a crankshaft?

A

Changes the reciprocating movement of the piston into rotary motion, which then provides drive.

Q

What is the purpose of a camshaft?

A

To control the opening and shutting of the inlet and exhaust valves. Driven by the crankshaft and moves at half its speed.

16
Q

What does the fuel injector do?

A

Injects measured amount of high pressure, atomised fuel into the cylinders.

17
Q

What does the pushrod do?

A

Transfers motion from the camshaft to the rocker arm in order to open a valve.

18
Q

What does a rocker arm do?

A

Pivoting arm that transfers motion from the pushrod to open a valve.
