Lubrication System Flashcards
What are the components in a lubrication system?
Sump and sump strainer Lube oil pump Priming pump Filter Heat exchanger 3 way cock valve Cooler isolation valve Bypass valve Reducing valve Engine block Pressure relief valve
What does the lube oil pump do?
Supplies oil under high pressure to the engines bearings and supplies oil at a lower pressure to the other working parts of the engine. It is a positive displacement pump.
What does the priming pump do?
Provides a method of supplying lube oil to the bearings prior to inital starting. It also provides a method of emptying the sump when necessary for maintenence.
What does the heat exchanger do?
Cools the lube oil using a thermostat which will open valves allowing the oil into the heat exchange to maintain its temperature.
What is the testing kit used for routine oil checks?
Kittewake
What are the 4 routine tests?
Viscosity test
Water test
Total base number/acidity
Insolubles
How often are routine tests performed and where are the results stored?
Weekly or more often if a fault is detected. Stored in the engines log book.
What is the purpose of a lubrication system?
To supply lube oil to the moving parts of a diesel engine to minimise friction and wear and ensure smooth running of the engine.
