Emergency Eye Wash
Used to wash chemicals from eyes
First Aid Kit
2 in lab, emergency aid supplies
Fume Hood
4 in lab, safe space for working with chemicals that give off vapours
Glass waste container
Area where glass waste goes so it can safely be disposed of
Safety Shower
2 in lab, to wash large amounts of chemicals off your body (remove clothes)
Soapy water spray
Used to clean the lab benches
What protective equipment should we be wearing?
Safety goggles, lab coats, closed toe shoes, hair must be tied back. Never bring food or drink in.
What should I do if there is a spill or a bottle ring on my bench top?
Wipe them up immediately
First aid for a chemical on the skin
Go to any sink, eyewash, emergency shower and flush affected area with lots of water, inform TA/instructor
First aid for chemicals in eye
Go to nearest eye wash station, flush for ten minutes, inform instructor, immediately report to health services
First aid for cuts, abrasions and burns
Report to TA/ instructor
If the fire alarm sounds…
Turn off gas, electricity and water and leave the building immediately.
If fire/explosion occurs in the lab…
Evacuate and close the doors, pull fire alarm and leave the building
Class A fires
Combustible materials (paper, wood, plastics)
Class B fires
Flammable liquids (gasoline, solvents, grease)
Class C fires
Electrical equipment
