Common Glassware Flashcards
Analytical Balance
Purpose: Extremely accurate masses, in a dedicated room, vibration proof tables
Accuracy: +/- 0.0001g
Top-loading Balance
Purpose: Rough weighing, use when exact mass isn’t critical
Accuracy: +/- 0.01g
Griffin Beaker
Purpose: Weigh solids, hold liquids, reaction vessels, heat solutions (heat and cold resistant)
Accuracy: +/- 5%
Boston Round Glass Bottle
Purpose: Store solutions (except NaOH)
Size: 500mL
Polyethylene bottle
Purpose: Storing solutions (including NaOH)
Size: 1000mL
Bunsen Burner
Purpose: Used as a source of heat, connect to natural gas lines
Burette
Purpose: Used primarily for titration, also sometimes used to accurately adding measured solution volumes in reactions
Size: 50mL
Accuracy: +/- 0.04mL
Burette Clamp
Purpose: Used to hold two burettes and or columns. Attaches to a retort rod.
Ring Clamp
Purpose: Supports equipment, often used with wire gauze, also used with funnels
Test tube clamp
Purpose: Used to hold a test tube (often when it needs to be heated)
Utility clamp
Purpose: Used to clamp many different items to retort rod
Crucible tongs
Purpose: Used to move hot crucibles
Glass dropper
Used to add solutions drop by drop
Evaporating dish
Used to evaporate solvent from a sample (temperature resistant)
Erlenmeyer flask
Used to hold solutions and perform reactions (often used in titrations)
Accuracy:
Round bottom flask
When reactions need to be heated in a bath of water/oil/sand
Vacuum Flask
Purpose: Used to filter solids from liquids, using vacuum pressure
Volumetric Flask
Purpose: Preparing solutions of very accurate known volume
Accuracy: +/- 0.08mL (depends on flask)
Flint Lighter
Purpose: To produce a spark by rubbing flint against a rough surface
Buchner Funnel
Purpose: Used with a vacuum flask and filter paper
Glass Funnel
Purpose: Used to help transfer liquids
Plastic Funnel
Purpose: Used to fill burettes as it is light and small
Graduated cylinder
Purpose: Used to measure solutions with decent accuracy
Pipette Bulb
Purpose: Used with pipettes to fill and dispense solutions
Mohr/graduated pipette
Purpose: To accurately measure multiple volumes, have an uncalibrated tip
Uncertainty: for a 10mL, +/- 0.020 mL
Volumetric pipette
Purpose: Only measure one volume, very accurate
Accuracy: +/- 0.02mL (depends on pipette)
Retort Rod
Purpose: Used to support equipment
Scoopula
Purpose: Used to remove solids from containers
Stirring rod
Purpose: Used to stir solutions
Test Tube
Purpose: Used for small scale reactions
Test tube brush
Purpose: To clean glassware
Test Tube Rack
Purpose: To hold test tubes
Tweezers
Purpose: To pick up small items such as boiling chips
Wash bottle
Purpose: Only ever filled with DI water
Watch Glass
Purpose: To hold small samples as they are drying, to cover beakers or flasks
Wire Gauze
Purpose: Can help support beakers over flame, also helps keep even heating
