Reaction #3: Identification of an Unknown Solid Acid Flashcards
Part 1: Titration
Weigh solid oxalic acid dihydrate
Rinse volumetric flask with DIx3
Add water to beaker and stir until dissolved
Pour solution into flask, rinse beaker with DI x3
Add water to flask until calibration, add last bit with dropper
Mix by completely flipping
Titrate oxalic acid with NaOH
Part B: Titration
Weigh out unknown solid acid
Weigh out three samples by difference
Heat if needed
Titrate
Primary Standard
Has a known concentration
Secondary Standard
Calibrated against a solution with a known concentration
Mono/di/tri protic acids
How many protons are available to dissociate
Bronsted and Lowry Acids
Acid donates protons, base receives protons
If you use either a strong base or acid…
The reaction will go to completion
Equivalence point
When in stoichiometric proportion
End point
When colour changes permanently
Standardization
Determine concentration of unknown by titrating it against a known concentration
