Safe Driving, Driving Techniques & Eco Driving Flashcards
What is ‘scanning’?
Keeping your eyes moving, checking in one area for a couple of seconds, and then moving your eyes to check another area
Where should you look when scanning?
In the distance
At the road surface
To your left and right
Regularly at your mirrors and instruments
What should you do when you see potential hazards?
Slow down and prepare to stop
How far should you be able to see ahead of you?
5 seconds
When driving, how should you position your vehicle?
Use ‘buffering’ - maximise distance from hazards
How long does it take the typical driver to react to a hazard?
1.5 seconds
What is the minimum response time to a hazard?
1.5 seconds
Which is often more appropriate - braking or swerving?
Braking - because swerving can result in a head-on collision
How large should the crash avoidance space between a driver and the car in front of them be?
3 seconds
When would it be necessary for a driver to increase their crash avoidance space?
In poor driving conditions, such as rain, night and when traveling on gravel roads
What is the crash avoidance space needed for a car travelling at 60km/h?
80km/h?
50 metres
67 metres
What is the most common form of crash for drivers?
Rear-end collisions
How should a driver brake?
First put light pressure on the brake pedal and pause
Then progressively apply the necessary braking pressure
Rules for steering
Steering must be smooth and progressive
Reduce speed before steering
When steering keep both hands on the outside of the steering wheel and thumbs along the rim
Where should the steering wheel be positioned?
Adjusted low & facing the driver’s chest?
