SAD DSM-5 Criteria

A

Fear and/or anxiety about 1 or more social situations in which the individual is exposed to possible scrutiny by others .
Fear that they will act in a way that will show their anxiety and by negatively evaluated.
Social situation almost always provoke anxiety/fear.
Social situations are avoided/ endured with intense fear/ anxiety.
Fear/ anxiety is out of proportion to actual threat posed by the social situation.
Fear/ anxiety/ avoidance is persistent - 6 months or more.
Causes clinically significant distress / impairment in areas of functioning.
Not attributable to substance abuse or medical condition.
Not better explained by another disorder
If a medical condition exists, fear, anxiety, avoidance is unrelated or excessive.

CBT Theory for SAD

A

● Process information in social situations for potential negative evaluation
○ In presence of an audience
○ Audience is perceived as inherently critical and has standards that are unattainable
○ Create mental representations of how they are being perceived by others
○ Cognitions, behaviors, physiology anxiety symptoms develop
○ Anxiety creates negative representation of the self and the negative representation of the self feeds anxiety
