Diagnostic Criteria
5 + of the following and at least one of depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure (same 2-week period)
o Depressed mood most of day every day
o Markedly diminished Interest in almost all activities
o Sig. Weight loss or weight gain
o Insomnia or hypersomnia
o Psychomotor Agitation or retardation
o Fatigue/Loss of Energy
o Worthlessness or excessive/inappropriate Guilt
o Poor Concentration/indecisiveness
o Recurrent thoughts of Death

Assessment

- Beck’s Depression Inventory
- MMPI-2 (depression scale)
Theory
o Depression is a result of learning history
▪ Actions of person do not result in positive reward
AND
▪ Escape and Avoidance behaviors from aversive condition are reinforced
o Additional consequences that increase depression (e.g. forming of close relationships)

Developing treatment goals
- Address avoidance patterns

o What is maintaining the depression?
o Identify behavior of interest; ABC worksheets
o Activity monitoring; avoidance modification
Repeatedly applying and troubleshooting activation and engagement
Rumination, consequences of it, mindfulness practice

Relapse prevention, links between actions and feelings, target primary avoidance patterns
