Q

What is the emphasis in other denominations?

A

Non-conformist denominations, like the Baptist or Pentecostal churches, the emphasis is placed on the person making a conscious decision to be baptised. So people must be baptised as adults.

What do non-conformist denominations support this view with?

A
  • The adult baptism of Jesus and others in the New Testament

- Their belief that a person needs to be a ‘believer’ before being baptised.

Q

What is baptism a way of?

A

Becoming a full member of the Christian community.

20
Q

In some denominations a person needs to be baptised before they can do what?

A

Before they can share in the Eucharist of communion.

Key quote: Matthew 26:26-28

A

‘While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”’

Q

Key quote: Matthew 3:16-17

A

‘As soon as Jesus was baptised, he went up out of the water. As that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”’
