Mission Flashcards
What is WCC?
World Council of Churches
What did the WCC give as a 2 part aim for Christian mission?
- The goal of conversion: continuing evangelism by helping people come to a personal faith in God and all that that means for their lives.
- The goal of reconciliation: working to see the Christian message playing a part in all aspects of society in order to bring peace about communication between people, peace and a world where humans can live in balance with the environment.
What is Missio Dei?
Understood to mean God’s activity or God’s mission. The mission of the church will include a range of activities.
What activities may this include?
- Starting up new churches in areas where there is none
- Meeting, talking and sharing views and having a dialogue with people from other religions is another activity
What does evangelism start from?
For many Christians it starts from the point of building genuine relationships with people who themselves are not part of church culture. It is through these relationships that many Christians seek to lead people to a faith in God.
What does the Salvation Army do?
Has a strong tradition of evangelism. It exists to ‘save souls, grow saints and serve a suffering humanity’. Seeks to make Jesus known through both its actions and its message, with the intention of persuading people to become Christians.
When did lots of new forms of church emerge?
Late 1960’s. Believers started to meet and worship on their homes, not controlled by existing churches’ formal ways of worship.
What has happened as these churches have grown?
As they have grown and begun to worship in larger congregations they have retained the importance of meeting in small groups in another’s homes during the week. In these groups they may pray, study the Bible and invite friends to join them.
Who is allowed to take part?
All members are able to take part when they feel the spirit of God leads them to speak, or may lead the meeting in some other way.
Mark 16:15
‘He said to them, “God into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”’
Romans 1:16
‘For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings the salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.’
Acts 1:8
‘But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes in you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Jude’s and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’
