What is heaven described like
Paradise
Filled with light and prosperity
Not necessarily a place, but a state of mind
Suffering and evil don’t exist
Encourages Christians to be obedient and serve God
What is hell described like? (Sanjana would know)
Punishment of people who haven’t repented while on earth
Eternal punishment and suffering
Soul and body are destroyed and cease to exist
Beyond death
Others believe it is a way of showing existence without God’s blessing
Wtf is purgatory?
Roman Catholic: many people aren’t pure enough to go to heaven, but not bad enough to go to hell, so they go through purification to achieve the holiness in order to go to heaven
You can also “buy” from the church to help you go through purgatory more quickly
Views on resurrection & afterlife
Humans have an immortal soul- can’t be seen
Makes us unique from animals, etc.
Jesus’ resurrection & ascension shows there is life after death
All the dead will be raised at the end of time
Apocalyptic ideas
People thought jesus would come back (parousia) and replace sinful and evil world they lived in.
They believe they are living in eschaton- the last days of the world.
some think it’s another way to say god has a plan
Different views on afterlife
Depends if they take a literal view or not
All- believe that events in the world are part of God’s plan which will have a good outcome
Most- will put the idea of afterlife at the back of their mind and concentrate to make present life better for all
- parable of the sheep and the goats (Matthew 25)- unless they help each other, salvation and heaven is at risk
