What is baptism
To make a persons entry into the church official
What is confirmation
Ceremony, renews vows made on behalf of baptism. Believed to strengthen the ties of the confirmation to the church and god. bishop anoints the believers forehead holy oil called Chrism
What is reconciliation
Confession of sin. How Catholics seek to obtain forgiveness for sins they commit. Must tell a priest about any sinful things they’ve done.. priest will give penance and will pronounce absolution.
What does the priest do when someone reconciliates?
Penance (says a certain number of prayers) absolution (gods forgiveness)
What is anointing the sick?
Priest of bishops anoints a severely sick person with the oil of the sick, through this the Holy Spirit renews persons faith and strength to cope with illness / also links suffering to Christ’s suffering, allow their sins to be forgiven and heal them, if that’s gods will
What is matrimony
Jesus performed the first miracle at a wedding. Believe god is present at ceremony and promises are made before him / couples joined in holy matrimony should be together for life / the union is the way that god blesses a couple, blesses then through one another
What is holy orders
Process by which men are deacons, priest or bishops. Like matrimony, it’s a commitment for life
What is the Eucharist
Seen as “the source and summit of the Christian life” / receiving the body and blood of Christ joins people together in faith and gives them the strength to live Christian lives and face any problems they may encounter
