1
Q

Landcare

A

A national movement that brought farmers and conservationists together to resolve environmental concerns. One of the largest volunteer movements where thousands of people and community groups work together to towards sustainable land use practices.

Q

What does landcare do

A

Landcare groups voluntarily coordinate their management efforts with surrounding land owners. The government contributes knowledge, expertise and some funding to assist in the combined efforts of Landcare members

Q

Landcare activities to sustain healthy outdoor environments include

A
  • planting native trees, shrubs and grasses to create habitat for native animals to improve biodiversity
  • working with landholders and farmers to care for soils to help prevent salinity and erosion
  • making ‘bug hotels’ to encourage bees and insects to pollinate gardens.

Q

Block orientation

A

When choosing a block for your home, make sure it will allow you to place the living areas where
you spend the most time on the north side of the house. This will take advantage of the winter sun,
keeping these rooms warm, light and bright. Avoid or minimise windows facing west or east and
make sure they are well shaded for summer.

Q

Landcare effectiveness at Phillip Island

A

Biodiversity conservation Replanting native trees and shrubs have contributed to the recovery of habitats for species like the little penguin and other native wildlife

Water management Fencing off waterways and establishing buffer zones have been effective in reducing runoff and improving the health of local water bodies.

Climate change Planting drought-resistant native species (banksia) and managing coastal environments to combat erosion

Q

Building materials

A

Does your builder:
Buy local materials to reduce carbon footprint.
Select materials that don’t have toxic elements and can be recycled and reused.
Source timber from sustainable plantations and buy local materials to reduce carbon footprint?
Examples of sustainable building materials include bamboo, stone, laminated timber, reclaimed wood and anything recycled.

Q

Solar panels

A

An energy-efficient design should have solar panels as it reduces the contribution to non renewable energy such as fossil fuel production, and produces sufficient amounts of energy at lower costs.

To support this, the Government is providing a 50% rebate to eligible househ

Q

Insulation

A

Insulating homes ceilings, walls and floors can save up to 45% of the cost of running your home. Adding as much insulation as possible while making sure it is installed correctly with no gaps and proper waterproofing is a sound investment for a home.

Q

Water

A

Save water by considering water recycling systems and choosing water saving fittings and appliances. Grey water systems are mandatory in most new housing systems. Energy saving shower heads can also receive a rebate in some council areas.

Q

Window frames, glazing and shading

A

Window frames help to ensure that the insulation value provided by the windows and walls is not lost through the window frames. Window glazing helps to boost the insulating value of the windows by up to 30% compared to traditional windows to ensure that homes are able to stay cool in summer and warm in summer. Window shading helps to block IR heat emitted from the sun and reflect them away from the house.

Q

Zoning and efficient heating and cooling

A

Designing zones in your home will allow you to efficiently heat and efficiently cool rooms individually. Doors are a great way to zone areas of your home, for example, between corridors and bedrooms or living areas, it’s a good way to keep heat where you want it throughout the house whilst using minimal energy to do so.

17
Q

Ventilation

A

Both windows and exhaust fans can help control ventilation and maintain air quality and minimise air leakage.

18
Q

Energy efficient hot water

A

A solar hot water system might be more expensive to buy and install, but the running costs will be significantly lower. The Victorian Government is providing a rebate on solar hot water systems for eligible households.

19
Q

Energy efficient appliances

A

When choosing fridges, televisions, washing machines, dishwashers and so on, choose energy efficient appliances with the highest energy star ratings. This reduces excessive energy use and saves on energy costs.
