Aesthetic Value
A judgement of value based on the appearance of an object and the emotional responses it causes
Recreation and Adventure
We need places for recreation, and things to challenge our senses. These environments provide opportunities for individuals to escape the pressures of everyday life. Individuals need healthy outdoor environments as a place to undertake challenging activities and
achieve goals through positive risk-taking behaviours.
Physical and Emotional Wellbeing
The physical benefits of exercising are well known; however studies have shown that exercising in natural settings is more effective than in a gym
Intrinsic Values
Intrinsic value of an outdoor environment means that is valued for what it is rather than what it can provide
Biodiversity
Biodiversity ensures a diverse range of species andecosystems are available to meet all the needs of society. Biodiversity is reliant on healthy outdoor environments
Education
Many opportunities exist for individuals to use outdoor environments for education. These can occur directly through school or group trips that may have a specific study goal or through personal development that occurs from undertaking recreational activities in outdoor environments.
Economic Value
Healthy outdoor environments are integral to the strength of the Australian economy. Timber, food, tourism, minerals and electricity are all directly related to the natural environment. These resources create thousands of jobs and generate billions of dollars
Future food and medicinal resources
It is estimated that food supply will need to increase by 70% over the next 30 years - to meet the growing demand (due to population increases) Australians play an important global role in this - as Australian farmers export around
Scientific Research
Provides a site for us to monitor the changes in our environments – Climate change, salinity, species loss and effects of logging are a few things that our environment can be used to monitor. We may find future medicinal sources that may cure diseases - but only if we find the time (and money) to conduct specific research.
