How many weeks are the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester?
1st- FDLMP- 13/14 weeks
2nd: 14-27 weeks
3rd: 28-42weeks
What is considered an abortion?
Loss of fetus
What is a threatened abortion?
Vaginal bleeding with closed cervix
Watch and wait (expected management)
What is an inevitable abortion?
Vaginal bleeding with partially dilated cervix. Loss is inevitable.
How often does hCG double, when does it peak, and what is the discriminatory zone?
hCG doubles every 2 days, peaks at 10 weeks (100K)
Discriminatory level= 1500-2000 (will see gestational sac)
What is anembryonic gestation?
A blighted ovum
Fertilized egg develops a placenta but no embryo
What is the most common immunologic factor causing recurrent abortions?
Antiphospholipid syndrome
What is the leading cause of maternal death in the first trimester?
Ectopic pregnancy
What is associated with a falling hCG concentration?
Blighted ovum, spontaneously resolving ectopic, or abnormal pregnancy
Who should RhoGAM be given to and when?
Rh- moms with Rh+ baby
Give at 28 weeks and within 72hrs of delivery
AND when a factor could increase chance of fetomaternal hemorrhage
