S6-Distribution Systems Flashcards
Cable Distribution Systems (Cable Plants)
Organized cabling system that connects the networks backbone in MDF to the IDF and end user’s wall jacks.
What is the Demarcation Point?
Location where the ISP ends and the network infrastructure for an organization begins.
What is the MDF
“main distribution frame”
Main Starting point/central hub for all interior cabling that will be distributed throughout the facility.
What is a Backbone Switch?
main Switch where everything else on the networks connects back to.
Cable Tray
Assembly of units that form a structural system that secures cables as they go across a building.
4 most common types of racks
- 2-post
- 4-post
- wall-mounted
- Rack Enclosed
2-post Rack
Features 2 vertical posts and is used for lighter equipment and/or patch panels & network cabling.
4-post Rack
Features 4 vertical posts ideal for heavier equipment
Wall-mounted Racks
Space saving solution for smaller network equipment and limited space environments
Full Cabinet Rack/ Rack enclosure
Fully enclosed rack that secures and protects high-value equipment
what is an IDF?
“Intermediate Distribution Frame”
acts as a distribution point, receiving connections from the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) and providing localized connectivity to specific areas or zones within a building or facility
What is a Patch Panel?
Device that contains a number of jacks used to connect and route circuits for monitoring, interconnecting, and testing circuits.
- convenient & flexible
- cost effective
what is a 110 Block?
Type of punch down block found on a patch panel that is used for voice and data applications that rely on CAT 5 or newer copper based networks.
Fiber Distribution Panel
Distribution panel that uses fiber connectors instead of punch down blocks.
- Can also act as an interface converter
what is a UPS?
“Uninterruptible Power Supply”
Electrical apparatus that provides emergency power when input source fails.
What is a PDU?
“Power Distribution Unit”
Specialized device for distributing power to various network components and equipment.
-essentially advanced power strips
- provide protection from surges, spikes and brownouts
what is the Ideal Temperature range for electronic equipment?
68-77 degrees F/ 20-25 degrees C
What is Port-side Exhaust and Intake?
Strategic method of air distribution in which server racks are positioned in alternating rows with cold and hot air.
What is a wet pipe system?
Basic fire suppression system that involves a sprinkler system with pipes that contain water.
What is a Pre-action system?
Type of Wet pipe system that helps prevent accidental releases through the use of a dual detector system that requires both the smoke & sprinkler detectors to trip before the fire suppression system activates.
What is a Special Suppression System?
Fire suppression system that uses a clean agent, which is an inert gas that displaces the Oxygen from an area to snuff out a fire.
