s3 neuroanatomy intro Flashcards
difference between motor and sensory neurones
motor- info from CNS to periphery
sensory info from periphery TO CNS
forebrain consists of?
cerebrum - split into 2 hemispheres
diencephalon- consists of hypothalamus and thalamus
> one on each side. act as relay s stations for sensory info
brainstem consists of
midbrain
pons (bulbous|)
medulla
(aside- cerebellum sits behind brainstem)
difference between grey and white matter
grey- formed as a result of high density cell bodies
white- myelinated, fatty
where is central sulcus found?
between frontal and parietal lobe
what is corpus callosum?
packed full of neurone axons (white matter)
> allows communication between hemispheres
rostral/caudal meaning
dorsal
ventral
R-towards nose
C- towards tail (back of brain)
D- superior surface of brain (top)
V- inferior surface of brain (base)
function of pons?
pons is bulbous region of brainstem
function
- feeding
trigeminal nerve carries motor fibres to muscles of mastication
- help control sleep
role of : frontal lobe
- voluntary motor control
- speech production
- social behaviour
- impulse control
- higher cognition (planning)
role of : temporal lobe
- language
- emotion
- long term memory
- sense of smell
- hearing
- taste
role of : parietal lobe
- somato sensory perception (touch temp vibration)
- spatial awareness
role of : occipital lobe
- visual perception
role of : cerebellum
- coordination and motor learning
pre central gyrus is
primary motor cortex
post central gyrus is
primary somatosensory cortex
