Goals of Orthotic Options for pts with Paraplegia:
Standing to maintain skeletal, renal, respiratory, circulatory and GIT function & form of ambulation
Mass produced orthotic options (2)
- Standing Frame w/ Swivel Walker
- Parapodium
Consists of broad base, posterior non articulated uprights extending from a flat base to a mid-torso, chest band, a posterior thoracolumbar band. Indicated for physiological standing.
Standing Frame
Similar to standing frame but the base has two distal plates that rock slightly to enable swivel gait. Allows for alternate or reciprocal swiveling.
Swivel Walker
Differs from the standing frame by virtue of joints where it has knee component to allow sitting. Indicated for children with myelodysplasia.
Parapodium
Includes either a shoe reinforced with transverse and longitudinal plates and BiCAAL ankle joints set in slight DF or a plastic solid ankle section, as well as pretibial band, a pawl lock with bail release, and a single thigh band.
Scott-Craig KAFOs
To whom are Scott-Craig KAFOs indicated?
Adults with paraplegia (For Swing-to or swing-through gait pattern with the aid of crutches or walker)
In a Reciprocating Gait Orthosis, the wearer should walk: (4 Stages)
- Shift the weight to the right leg
- Tuck the pelvis by extending the upper thorax
- Press on the crutches
- Allow the left leg to swing through
