What 3 ways can teachers commit to fairness and equity?
- provide each child resources to develop as literacy learners
- maintain high expectations for each
- ensure each receive equitable opportunities to learn and advance
How can a student’s individual growth be supported?
Full collaborative learning community with full participation in a challenging, meaning centered curriculum. Diverse learning community.
What ways can a teacher advance equity?
Design sound activities for individual learners and fairly allocate instructional resources…including 1 on 1 attention.
What should we expect from students as they engage with others in the classroom?
Exercise fairness and equity among each other. If an issue arises…talk about how something can be offensive to certain groups of people.
What does fairness mean besides treating kids equally?
Knowing students’ as individuals and adjusting instruction to meet their needs. Be aware of the range of abilities which includes undiagnosed impairments.
How can a teacher make special efforts to meet needs of ELL students and families?
Use parallel instruction in the primary language. Make a safe environment to make them take risks. Model grammatical accuracy. Be aware of the level of ELL. Beginner? ELPA test.
What should teachers discuss about unethical use of communication tools?
Negative impact on their future. Poor choices affect them and peers.
What should teachers be mindful of with fairness and equity regarding technology?
Some may have everyday access without limits and soms have no access. Teachers should provide much access at school.
How can teachers value diversity in the classroom?
First, understand that it encompasses every aspect of who a person is. Teachers can use children literature to develope awareness and sensitivity to other cultures. Ex: awareness of eye contact in some cultures may be considered rude. Also hand gestures.
Should teachers celebrate diversity only through heroes and holidays?
NO! We should draw a variety of literary and cultural traditions that promote positive images of different ethnicities. Be aware that some literature may portray stereotypes.
How can teachers encourage individuality?
Frequently arrange groups with different backgrounds and ability levels next to each other.
