What is the 1st step in decoding?
Pronounce. Be aware of the letters and sounds represented by letters. Sounding out and blending. Use context clues to see if it makes sense. Misread? More room for comprehension if the words are easily decoded.
What has studies proven about the connection between decoding and comprehension?
When word recognition is developed to the point of fluency, comprehension benefits are maximized. Students who learned to recognize most of the words in the passage scored higher on comprehension questions.
