- Recognition of Sociocultural, politial and physical Influences
Recognition of physical, social and political environmental Influences
It became evident that inequalities in health status were increasing, with wealthier individuals more likely to have better health outcomes. This highlighted that many factors beyond individual control, such as physical, sociocultural, and political environments, influence health outcomes, necessitating a new approach known as the social model of health.
Health promotion
Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over and improve their health. It focuses on prevention rather than cure and uses the causes of disease as the starting point rather than diseases
themselves.
The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion
is an approach to health developed by the WHO that aims to reduce inequalities in health. It reflects
the social model of health and provides five action areas that can be used as a basis of improving health outcomes.
BAD CATS SMELL DEAD RATS
Build healthy public policy
Create supportive environments
Strengthen community action

An example of the social model
‘Life. Be in it’ was one of the first health promotion campaigns designed to bring about behaviour change.
Social advantages

Strengthen community action
Has a focus on community groups and individuals working together to promote health and wellbeing
Advocacy
individuals or groups in a community try to change the opinions to gain support from governments and societies of those responsible
for making public policies and laws. Actions undertaken may include social media campaigns, lobbying government, conducting research or public speaking.
ENABLE
All individuals regardless of their health status must have equal opportunities and resources available to enable
them to achieve optimal H&WB. This includes access to education, nutritious food and health care. By empowering people to take control of factors that influence their lives, their health and wellbeing will improve.
MEDIATE

physical and sociocultural environment to promote health and wellbeing. Conflict can occur between different individuals, groups, business groups.
