What do we do when rewriting a rhythm?
We change the type of beat, but we keep the number of beats the same
What are irregular bars?
Bars that cannot be divided into equal groups of two or three beats. These contain an odd number of beats as bars are divided into unequal parts. Here, it is possible today divide bars in more than one way, eg. in quintuple time, a bar can be divided into 3+2 beats or 2+3 beats
Most common irregular time?
Quintuple time (5 beats) or septuple time (7 beats).
What does 2:4 mean?
Two crotchet beats per bar
What does 9:8 mean?
9 quaver beats per bar
Beams
These are used to group together notes shorter than a crotchet within each part of an irregular bar
Tie
These are used to join notes across different parts of an irregular bar, or across a bar-line
Rest
These are to show each beat, part-bar or whole bar, depending on how the bars are divided
What is a triplet?
A group of three notes played in the same amount of time as two non-triplet notes of the same time value
What are quintuplets and sextuplets?
Groups of five or six notes that are played in the same amount of time as a group of four notes of the same time value. These can be of any time value. And can also contain a combination of time values
