Rusting Flashcards
True of False ‘All metals rust’
False only Iron rusts, every other metals corrode.
What is necessary to make Iron rust.
Oxygen and Water
Describe the experiment to test if you just need oxygen to rust.
• To test if you just need oxygen to rust iron, use cotton wool in a boiling tube with a bung, a nail sitting above the cotton wool, with calcium chloride at the bottom of the tube.
What is Calcium Chloride used for?
It’s a drying agent.
• To test if you just need water to rust iron?
• To test if you just need water to rust iron, fill boiling tube with BOILED water, put nail in, and layer oil on the top of the water, with a bung in the tube.
T or F, Oil does not mix with water.
• True , The oil does not mix the water and removes all air and oxygen.
Why use boiled water?
• The boiled water will help to remove oxygen.
• To test if both is necessary?
• To test if both is necessary fill a boing tube with water, to half the height of the nail and leave it exposed to oxygen and air.
• To prevent rust, you can Galvanise, what is that?
Coating the Iron with Zinc. This method is used on Buckets and Some nails.
How can you prevent rust? (4 ways)
Galvanise, Paint, Sacrificial Metal, Oil or Grease.
What is bad about paining?
The paint will eventually come off. (Common on things like Bike Frames.)
What is Sacrificial Metal?
You can use sacrificial metal, when a metal sacrifices itself to save iron, this method is used on boats.
What do we mean by Oil and Grease?
Oil or grease can also stop a nail from rusting, this method is used on Machines and moving parts, like bike chains.
