- SR’s, very radical and popular
- middle class reformers in the Duma wanted democracy
- bolsheviks and Mensheviks led by Lenin. Illegal party, very disciplined
1905 revolution and October manifesto
Father Gapon led peaceful protesters demanding reforms
They were shot and killed. Known as Bloody Sunday
This triggered waves of rebellions. Tsar issued October manifesto promising a Duma. This divided opponents, rebellion crushed
Facts about duma
- Tsar took no notice of them
- first and second Duma lasted less than one year
- in 1907 voting rules change by Tsar
- even they lasted until 1911
Stolypins reforms
Used a carrot and stick approach
Used force and violence
Allowed kulaks to buy land, so they prospered and created more efficient farms
Failed to improve working conditions
Grain went from 49m to 90m tonnes in 1913
