Who was Peter the Great?
A Russian tsar who introduced western languages and technologies to the Russian elite, moving the capital from Moscow to St. Petersburg
What happened when Russia, Prussia, and Austria all wanted Poland?
They evenly split it up instead of fighting over it
Who is Catherine II the Great?
Empress of Russia who greatly increased the territory of the empire, it’s wealth and education benefits for people, sent her husband (Peter III) to prison where he died so she could rule (he sucked at being ruler) she was German and married into the Russian royalty thing
What are Cossacks?
A southern Russian band of peasants “warriors” who were treated poorly before they ran away. Later they became a somewhat powerful force.
What is St. Basil’s cathedral?
Ivan IV built it to celebrate his victories over the Mongols (pushed them out of Russia)
Who was Ivan IV the Terrible?
Earned his nickname for his acts of cruelty towards people who disagreed with him, was the first ruler to assume the title czar of all of Russia.
What was the Crimea?
A Russian war against the Ottoman Turks for control of the Black Sea, intervention by Britain and France caused Russia to lose and for Turkey to gain independence
What is westernization?
Adoption of western ideas, technology, and culture
