The 24 second clock will start when
A team gains a new possession of a ball which is in play
On a throw-in, the 24 second clock shall start when
The ball is legally touched on the court by a player
To constitute a legal field goal attempt, the following conditions must be complied with (2)
1-The ball must leave the player’s hand prior to the expiration of 24 seconds.
2-after leaving the player’s hand, the ball must make contact with the basket ring
A team is considered in possession of the ball when (4)
- it’s held
- passed
- dribbled
- batted away (opponent hasn’t gained possession)
Team possession and when (2)
1-The ball hits the rim
2-The opponent gains possession
If a defensive player is the last to touch the ball before going out of bounds or entering the basket ring from below, the 24 second clock is
Stopped and the offensive team shall be awarded the ball
If there is an inadvertent whistle as the 24 second clock buzzer sounds while the ball is in the air and the FGA hits rim
Play shall be suspended and play resumed by a jump ball between any two opponents at the center circle
If there is an inadvertent whistle as the 24 second clock buzzer sounds while the ball is in the air and does not hit the rim
It is a 24 second violation
If there is an inadvertent whistle as the 24 second clock buzzer sounds while the ball is in the air and the FGM
The goal shall count and the ball inbounded as after any successful field goal
It is a 24 second clock violation when it reads zero and the ball is dead unless one of the following has occurred (4)
1-kicking violation
2-punched ball violation
3-defensive 3s violation
4-personal or technical foul by the defensive team
Where is the ball put into play after a 24 second violation
On the sideline, nearest the spot where play was suspended but no nearer to the baseline than the free-throw line extended
The 24 second clock is never reset on the following (6)
1-defensive player is the last to touch the ball before going out of bounds or entering the basket rain from below
2-technical fouls or delay of game warning on the offensive team
3-jump ball is re-tossed, double violation or correctable error
4-suspension of play (except for infection control)
5-Field goal attempt which fails to touch the rim
6-Jump balls which are the results of a held ball caused by the defense
The 24 second clock shall be RESET to 24 seconds anytime the following occurs (6):
1-change of possession
2-ball from the playing court contact in the basket ring of the team which is in possession
3-personal foul where ball is being inbounded in back court
4-violation where ball is being inbounded in backcourt
5-jump balls which are not the result of a held ball caused by the defense
6-All flagrant and punching fouls
The 24 second clock shall remain the same as when play was interrupted or reset to 14 seconds, whichever is greater, anytime the following occurs (6):
1-personal foul by the defense where ball is being inbounded in front court
2-defensive three second violation
3-technical fouls and/or delay of game warnings on the defensive team
4-kicked or punched bowl by the defensive team with the ball being inbounded in the offensive team’s front court
5-infection control
6-jump balls retained by the offensive team as the result of any violation by the defensive team during a jump ball which results in a front court throw-in
