Sound Signals
Rule 32: Definitions
Whistle: Any sound signaling appliance capable of producing the prescribed blasts
-Short Blast: Blast of about 1 second
-Prolonged Blast: Blast of 4 to 6 seconds
Rule 33: Equipment of Sound Signals
- Vessel < 12 m : some method of making
> 12 m in length: whistle
> 20m m : bell and whistle
> 100 m: gong, bell, and whistle
Rule 34: Maneuvering International
- One Short Blast:
“I am altering my course to stbd”
-Two Short Blasts:
“I am altering my course to port”
Three short blasts:
“I am operating astern propulsion”
Rule 34: Inland
One short blast: “I intend to leave you on my port side”
Two short blasts: “I intend to leave you on my stbd side”
Three short blasts: “I am operating astern propulsion”
If in agreement, sound the exact same whistle sound
Sight of another Vessel: International
A vessel intending to overtake:
-Two prolonged blasts followed by one short blast: “I intend to overtake you on your stbd side”
-I intend to overtake you on your stbd side”
When in doubt
5 short and rapid blasts
What do you do if you hit a bend?
One prolonged blast, approaching vessel would do the same
Inland Warning(Rule 34)
Rule 35: Restricted Visability
PDV making way: at intervals of two minutes: one prolonged blast
PDV not making way: Two prolonged blasts with about 2 seconds between them
NUC, RAM, CBD, Sailing, Fishing, Towing/Pushing: one prolonged blast followed by two short blasts
Towed vessel: one prolonged blast, followed by three short blasts
Vessel at anchor:
-Intervals nte 1 minute: ring bell rapidly for 5 seconds
- > 100 m, 5 seconds forward then 5 seconds aft
optional: one short blast, one prolonged blast, one short
Vessel Aground
- Anchored vessel +3 distinct stokes on the ball immediately before and after ringing
- < 20 m
- Any sound signal at intervals NTE 2-minutes
Pilot Vessel
-PDV or Anchored + 4 short blasts
Rule 36: Signals to Attract Attention
Any light or sound signal that cannot be confused with another light or sound signal
